  • THIS PROJECT ALIGNS THE CLASSROOM BARS WITH GLENDALE AND THE LARGER URBAN CONTEXT TO CONVEY THE GREATER CIVIC MEANING OF THE BUILDING. THE SCHOOL ESTABLISHES A STRONG URBAN EXPERIENCE BY STACKING THE CLASSROOMS ON TOP OF THE OFFICE IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH A STRONGER URBAN FAÇADE. THE CLASSROOM BAR IS THEN INTERRUPTED BY COMMUNITY SPACES THAT PENETRATE THROUGH AND FOCUS THE VIEW ON COMMUNITY COLLABORATION. THESE SPACES ARE THOUGHT OF DIFFERNTLY THAN THE CLASSROOM SPACES AND THEREFORE ARE CLADDED DIFFERENTLY. THE CLASSROOMS UTILIZE CROSS VENTILATION, STACK VENTILATION, SKYLIGHTING, AND PERFORATED ALUMINUM FINS TO REDUCE SOLAR HEAT GAIN. MEANWHILE, THE LARGER COMMUNITY SPACES ARE CLAD WITH A BLUE TRIANGUATED SKIN THAT PERFORMS DIFFERENTLY ON THE INTERIOR BASED ON THE ACTIVITY ALLOCATED TO EACH SPACE. FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE LIBRARY, THE SKIN THICKENS TO ENCASE BOOKSHELVES. IN THE CAFETERIA, THE SKIN IS THIN AND MADE OF A HARD REFLECTIVE SURFACE THAT WILL CREATE MORE ENERGY IN THE SPACE BY REVERBERATING SOUND. IN THE MULTI-PURPOSE SPACE THE SKIN INTERIOR IS CURVED TO DIFFUSE SOUNDS TO REDUCE THE REVERBERATION FOR PERFORMANCE BASED ACOUSTICS. THE STRUCTURE IS ALSO THOUGHT OF DIFFERENTLY FOR THE COMMUNITY SPACES; INSTEAD OF STRAIGHT FORWARD MOMENT FRAME STEEL WIDE FLANGE CONSTRUCTION, THE TRIANGULATED SURFACES ARE STRUCTURED BY TRIANGUALTED STEEL EXTRUSIONS. 1815 GLENDALE CHARTERED HIGH SCHOOL ELEVATES THE EXPERIENCE OF GOING TO SCHOOL IN THE ECHO PARK DISTRICT THROUGH AN INTELLIGENT COMPOSITION OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM.
  • AS PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS FOR THIS PROJECT, I BUILT A SECTION MODEL AT 1/4" = 1'0" SCALE. IT SHOWS THE PREVIOUS LAYOUT OF SPACES WHICH CHANGED IN THE FINAL DESIGN. THE EXERCISE REVEALED A LACK IN CONSISTENT LANGUAGE OF SPACES, WHICH WAS RESOLVED IN THE FINAL DESIGN BY CLADDING THE CLASSROOMS AND COLLABORATION SPACES DIFFERENTLY. THE CIRCULATION WASTED A LOT OF SPACE AND CREATED AWKWARD ADJACENCIES WHICH WERE REORGANIZED AND OPTIMIZED INTHE FINAL DESIGN. THE MODEL ALSO REVEALED HOW LITTLE LIGHT ENTERED THE CENTRAL WALKING SPACE AND LED TO MOVING THE LARGE MULTIPURPOSE SPACE ALL THE WAY TO THE REAR BOUNDARY OF THE SITE. FURTHERMORE, THE PERFORATED FINS ON THE MODEL ALSO SHADED A LOT OF UNNECCESARY WALLS IN THE FACADE AND THAT WAS OPTIMIZED AND RESOLVED WITH SILLS THAT CAUGHT THE FINS AT TOP AND BOTTOM IN THE FINAL PROJECT. THE EXERCISE OF BUILDING THIS LARGE OF A MODEL WAS INVALUABLE IN CREATING A COHESIVE PROJECT.
  • THE MODEL WERE MADE TO BE PULLED APART TO SEE A SECTIONAL VIEW OF THE CLASSROOMS AND ENTRANCE SPACE.
  • SHOWN IS THE TRIANGULATED CAFETERIA SPACE. THE LANGUAGE OF TRIANGULATION CAME FROM CARVING OFF PARTS OF THE ROOF OF THE SPACE TO ALLOW MORE LIGHT INTO THE PROJECT SITE.
