The dry Karoo in South Africa has a sparse barren landscape, where the main economic activity is wool and meat from hardy Karoo sheep. The Karoo pleatau actually covers much of South Africa. Every now and then you can find a magical spot or small town full of charm and mystery.
I once got lost on the back roads after having some car issues. I past this small section of derelict houses which must of been for some farm workers. It seemed abandoned, but one small family was left there, in the middle of the Karoo, and an hours drive from the closest town. I cautiously approached them only to find out that they were very welcoming and hospitable.
Every time I'm nearby, I visit and bring supplies for them. Hopefully next time they will still be there, as farming is getting harder in the Karoo, it gets even harder for the secluded underpaid farm worker.
