In the summer of 2008, Clive Wilkinson Architects was selected to implement a master plan for Santa Monica College’s Academy of Entertainment and Technology (AET) including the new headquarters for the world-renowned KCRW Radio Station. This mixture of educational facilities and professional offices posed an opportunity for CWa to unite the two disciplines.
Via numerous client discussions, Clive Wilkinson Architects discovered that the various media programs share the common theme of ‘storytelling’ and began thinking of the new campus within a narrative for the progressive sequence of learning. The fully renovated AET, replete with classrooms, student lounges and faculty offices, will operate as an arrival point for new media students and as an incubator of new ideas. The New Media Technology addition, housing production facilities and editing suites, will continue the story with an emphasis on experimentation and discovery. Finally, the new KCRW building will act as the endpoint for the narrative sequence, where ideas have matured and find their places in a real-world application. Connecting these experiences is the creative arena of the central courtyard where a café, supportive landscaping and event infrastructure will enable all programs to publicly converge into a single creative community.
