KAIA | King Abdulaziz International Airport
Architectural Visualization Film

This video is an architectural visualization commissioned by the new International Airport of Jeddah. Construction had just begun on this airport at the time – the goal was to create a video that demonstrated the incredible final structure which is one of the most innovative airports in the world in terms of its design and building techniques. This project was developed in collaboration with the team at Vision-Digital and Direct2Brain based in Rome, and produced by Cow and Boys.

I used my background in architecture for modelling some of the architectural environments. I enjoy integrating and pulling from my experience in multiple facets of computer graphics, and as the project progressed I was able to combine my skills in making animatics, preparing scene layouts, 3D crowd duplication and matchmoving of live footage.

The Challenge
This project started with literally thousands of architectural blueprints and still images of design plans for the airport. From these raw materials, we were challenged to bring the International Airport of Jeddah to life before its actual construction. Working from the ground up, we started by constructing 3D architectural models based on the blueprints. We then used the visual references for the design elements to create a virtual construction of the airport, and finally integrated the models with live action footage shot on a green screen.
Combining architectural visualization techniques and visual effects, we were able to create a visual experience of the airport for our client.

The Making Of
The 3D software of choice for modelling the architectural visualization elements was 3D Studio MAX. The lighting and rendering process was done in both 3D Studio MAX and Cinema 4D using V-Ray rendering engine.

The VFX Process
The following video showcases the steps of the post-production phase, including matching the virtual and real camera movements and integration with the live action footage.
The match-moving was done using PFTrack and Nuke was used for the final integration/compositing.
