Once a person has awakened mind, he began to struggle with nature. The onset of the industrial age in the relationship between man and nature usually associated with the victory and the final approval of the person. At that time, there were a new type of city, constructed on the principle of modernity. In the USSR the idea of active industrialization was closely connected with the belief in heaven on earth for everyone.
For this project, I examine the evolution of industrial spaces and moods of man in relation to these spaces. I chose Donetsk as a shooting location. The city grew out of the camp, which was built around a steel plant in the second half of the XIX century. In Soviet times it was the large industrial center. After the collapse of the Soviet Union production crisis. Today, many companies cut back, most of the mines closed.
I had a personal reason to choose this city. I lived there for a while and had a difficult relationship with its space. I remember the art museum: two small rooms, and the series of images terricones on the walls. Waste heaps everywhere. Those heaps and factory spaces often becomes a place for children to play, but were made beyond the concept of "beauty." There was still a sense that I live in a place where time can freeze, hide, where ever heard a quiet monotone zoom. The clouds are not floating there. They just hang in the sky. And the feeling that nothing is going on, creates a sense like "The Langoliers". Summer is very hot. Dawn is short. The sun heats the asphalt all day long, trembling wall are rising. You are looking at the deserted city through it. And once in a while a bus full of men, with eyes painted with coal dust.
I returned there with the intent to document the changes that have occurred and with a vague desire to deal with "my langoliers".
Traveling through this desolate spaces, I caught myself feeling that I look at the artifacts of civilization, which is gradually disappearing. Waste heaps and pyramids of Egypt. High voltage towers and the remains of Aztec temples. Landfills, the Berlin Wall ... You look at them. They look at you and become an unwitting commentary to our existence on this planet.
These pictures can be presented as documents of a certain space, though I did not aim to tell the story of a particular city. This is part of a subjective study of relations between the force and the break, hope and disappointment. Between what remains and stubbornly continues to exist, and what is gone forever.
