Joi Vodka dispenser & shot glasses
INSPIRATION
My inspiration for Joi Vodka was a vibrant loudmouth thatdidn’t care if the product they were using was flashy and distracting, as longas it was a fully functional product. I gained inspiration from modern kitchenware, 3D art and colorful paintings. All these findings were covered with rich, bright colors and free flowing lines. This gave me the idea to think outside ofthe traditional cylinder that held liquid and branch out to look at outlandishshapes that wouldn’t necessarily be thought of for holding a drink. I alsoconsidered where I wanted Joi vodka to be used; it was intended for a nightclub. So with this is mind, I wanted the bottle to stand out in a dark club andwould catch your eye with flashing lights would touch it. The idea of a bottlethat at first made you question its functionality became the ultimate goal.
SKETCHES
The sketches started off with the idea of having bubblesgrowing on top of each other, essentially a pile of bubbles that held liquid. On second thought instead of having a bubble that looked literally like a cup,I wanted the bubbles to look as if they were growing off of themselves and thenfloating away. The sketches on the right showcase the floating bubble designand the functionality. A threading top for refilling and tube is visible toshow that not only is this an eye catching bottle but that it can also be fullyfunctional. For the complimentaryutensil, I was fighting with the idea of having a little tray or shot glasses. This being a vodka bottle, the shot glasses made more sense.
PROTOTYPE
After finalizing the initial design, I needed to find amaterial that was round and easy to work with. I landed on the concept of usingfoam for the round balls. The prototype was made out of foam that was prettyporous, I filled it in with multiple layers of gesso and a filler primer. I wasable to get a smooth finish that was pretty glossy. Critique of the prototypehelped me realize that the placement of the balls gave off a snowman effect andwas too childish due to the white color. The flat bottom piece elevated thebottle but at the same it took away from the overall round shape and I didn’twant to drift away from that form. The prototype gave me the opportunity togage what size was ideal and what pouring spout that I liked the best and wouldmost compliment the bubble shaped bottle.
FINAL MODEL
I am very pleased with the finished product; it is somethingthat I am proud to say that I was created from ideation to final model. The finishhas the high gloss that I was trying to achieve and the layout of the bubbleslooks great no matter with angle you look at it. The complimentary shot glassesonly enhance the design with its simplicity; it doesn’t take away from thevodka bottle but still fits in. if I had to change anything, it would have tobe the finish and size of the pouring spot. The size is a bit too, 20%reduction would really help. I also should have used a metallic finish to makeit more believable, the way that it is now makes it look like plastic.
BACKGROUND
The initial goal for this assignment is to design a teavessel and supporting utensil. I tweaked the assignment to cater to an alcoholbeverage, so I made it a vodka bottle. The product has to be fully thought outfrom inspiration, ideation and final model. The utensil has to support andcompliment the drinking vessel. I lookedat other alcohol bottles that are already out on the market and I didn’t likethe idea of every bottle being serious and mature. I understand the agerequirements and mindset when it comes to drinking but I wanted to add some funand boldness to the bottles. A matching shot glass would go perfect with thebottle, seeing that it is the next step of the drinking experience.

USER
Joi was inspired and created for the vibrant and uniqueHarajuku culture in Japan. Though Harajuku consists of many different stylesfrom Gothic , the average American Teenager to more costume style, it all hasextreme twist to it and is very eye catching. This “not afraid to be bold”culture is something that is embodied in the Joi Vodka bottle, it representsthat one person that doesn’t care if it looks crazy as long as it stands outand is functional. One can see the targetaudience when looking at the bubble shapes of the container with its bold andbright colors. It has an out there design but at the same time it is afunctional drinking vessel. Joi is forthe 21 years of age and older crowd that is able to drink but at the same timewant something that is childlike and youthful with a sense of humor.

MARKETING
Joi Vodka would fit perfectly in any club or household for agood time. I could picture marketing from commercials, print and sponsorshipsat public events. For example, Absolut Vodka has many different advertisementsin the club scene, on television and at a vast amount parades, celebrations andfestivals.
To get Joi Vodka in the mainstream market, I would have toconsider the demographic using my product. Joi is intended for the 21+ crowdthat is new to the club scene, watching MTV and frequents Las Vegas or similarparty or vacation locations. With this being said it would important to get Joiin music videos, on huge billboards and at the latest night clubs and poolparties.

POSSIBLE VERSIONS
Many alcohol companies have different trims and versions oftheir product; I wanted the same thing for Joi Vodka. I wanted to have manydifferent type of vodka that varied with their taste. To go along with the differenttastes, different colored bottles would go along. For example, peach flavoredvodka would have light orange tones for the bubbles and a raspberry flavorwould have pinkish red tones. Along with flavors, I also wanted to have moreexclusive or limited edition bottles. These would have chrome or matte blackfinishes to the bottle. I can imagine there being many varieties of bottles tosuit anyone’s taste and budget.
