Despite a career spanning 40 years and a pop culture influence that has stretched just as far, Ten Years in an Open Necked Shirt is the only officially-published collection of John Cooper Clarke’s satirical and biting poetry. Now out of print, original copies were swapping hands for £60-200 on Ebay and Amazon. John and his management struck a deal with Random House to re-publish a new version on their Vintage imprint to coincide with a new UK tour.
Our brief was to design a new, modernised jacket. The original book was authored by John and an illustrator friend, Steve Maguire, who designed the cover. Steve had tragically died not long after it was first published, and so it was of utmost importance that we treated that artwork with respect – but with original copies so rare we would have to recreate it from scratch.
We worked with Kenn Goodall who painted us an amazing homage to the original, and we drew some typography that was inspired by the hand-drawn do-it-yourself aesthetic of old punk fanzines (Jon’s old stomping ground).
The book was an immediate sell out and has already been reprinted due to demand, within nine months of the initial publication.
