John Cage Concert
For this semester-long project, all students were assigned one piece of contemporary/experimental musical piece. Through endless amounts of exploration, we had to translate audio into visual and create a poster that reflected the feeling, mood and meaning of the music.
John Cage was an incredibly interesting musician, and he composed a lot of his music with chance. He devised 'chance-systems', or ways of calculating and mapping randomness. Through research, I learnt how to use his systems, and they served as a basis throughout the project. The background of my poster is a photograph of random watercolor markings that were placed strategically on top of a John Cage quote. The typography, although not random, was placed to reflect the fragmented and light nature of the music.
