Character Design
Cyber bullying builds character

Johan Potma takes on possibly the fastest growing issue in the modern era armed with one of the most traditional forms of expression.
At the very core Johan Potma's portfolio are imaginative characters in far away worlds. Each painting hints at a fantastic dream from the weird mind of an exceptionally creative young sprite. So when Host went looking for a character designer to draw the attention of the online youth Johan Potma seemed in many ways the perfect artist for the project. The project began with a very lucid brief from the creative team and the final artworks benefitted from Johan being able to add his own individual flare.

So on one level Johan's work seemed a perfect fit, but on another level Johan's paintings and the issue to be addressed were poles apart. Johan Potma uses a painstaking process of treating recycled wooden board, treating it then applying acrylic in layers to build up his paintings. Cyber bullying by its very definition is bullying that goes viral at lightening speed via the internet. It is perhaps the contrast between the content and the media that lead to such an eye catching campaign.

At the very least the contrast made the brief an interesting one for all involved and certainly made the project overall a very rewarding one to watch go from initial concepts to final execution. It must also be said that Host have our utmost respect for being able to pull things together to create the final campaign which we have enjoyed so much.
