As a child, Joe Torre lived in a household where he witnessed his mother being physically abused by his father. Though Joe himself wasn't physically abused, he carried emotional scars into adulthood. He created the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation to help children who are living in abusive environments.
I am especially fond of this work for two reasons. First, it afforded me the chance to meet the great Joe Torre. And second, we won an Emmy award. Self promoting pic below.
