This is a concrete masonry block designed for a competition by the Orco Block Company's CMU competition for college students. The new block I designed with 3 other students will mainly perform in a visual manner in terms of the variety of surfaces it is able to create. It has a smooth wave-like quality to its texture not usually found in regular precision blocks. This also provides a scaffolding effect to the surface when the blocks are stacked. Apart from its visual performance, this block also allows for balanced sound refraction as sound waves bounce off the curved surfaces more naturally than a orthogonal wall. This block is titled the James Bond Block in reference to the iconic figure's smooth bravado as well as his ability to perform what seems to be impossible.
This project continues the study of how surface can be thought of as aggregation of line and how line can therefore be manipulated to create more interesting surfaces. It is a simple start to the exploration, yet there is a lot of untapped potential in this simple move that I am very interested in. Read Less
