A settembre 2012, nel bel mezzo della crisi economica, 26 marinai provenienti da Montenegro, Egitto, Albania, Ghana, Romania, Ucraina e Serbia hanno deciso di occupare la Ionian Spirit, la nave sulla quale lavoravano, e di tenerla in ostaggio all'interno del porto di Brindisi, nella speranza di costringere in questo modo l'armatore della nave a pagare i loro stipendi. Hanno vissuto a bordo della nave per dodici mesi senza denaro, cibo, elettricità né aiuto da parte della compagnia, rischiando le loro vite e mettendo a dura prova i loro legami affettivi nei Paesi d'origine.
E tutto ciò per qualcosa che, in tempi migliori, sarebbe stato loro di diritto.
In September 2012, with the financial crisis still in full swing, a group of 26 sailors from Montenegro, Egypt, Albania, Ghana, Romania, Ucraina and Serbia decided to occupy the Ionian Spirit, the ship where they worked, and hold it hostage inside the port of Brindisi, in southern Italy, in order to force the ship owner to pay their wages. They've been living aboard the ship for twelve months without money, food, electricity and help from the company, risking their lives and endangering the relationships with their families back home.
And all of this for something that, in better days, would have been theirs to claim.
La vita a bordo della Ionian Spirit è diventata presto molto dura: l'energia elettrica viene fornita da un piccolo generatore, concesso in prestito da un privato, che può essere utilizzato solo dopo le 17:00, in modo da sfruttare al massimo il poco carburante a disposizione per illuminare le serate dell'equipaggio. Il problema principale che ne deriva è l'impossibilità di utilizzare la stragrande maggioranza dell'equipaggiamento a bordo prima di quell'ora, dato che quasi tutto sulla nave richiede energia elettrica per funzionare, anche i servizi igienici.
Come se non bastasse, a bordo non c'è acqua calda e ciò ha costretto i marinai a sviluppare metodi a dir poco peculilari, e pericolosi, per poter usufruire di questo lusso. Quello più impressionante è una serpentina elettrica completamente esposta, collegata all'impianto elettrico mediante due morsetti, immersa in un secchio di plastica. Questo stratagemma consente di scaldare una piccola quantità di acqua da utilizzare per lavarsi. L'unico lato negativo è che può facilmente uccidere un uomo.
Life aboard the Ionian Spirit has become hard to say the least: power comes from a small generator provided by a private company and it's being operated only after 5 PM, so that the little fuel can provide enough energy to light the crew’s evenings. The biggest problem with this is the fact that basically everything on the ship is electrically operated, even toilettes, so that before sunset there is nothing working properly on board.
Hot water is not available at all and this has led the crew to develop peculiar and dangerous ways to heat up their water. The most impressive is an exposed heating coil. Directly connected to the power grid and put into a plastic bucket it allows a small amount of water to be heated. Its only downside is it can easily kill a man.
Il cibo viene fornito dalla Caritas, che si è fatta carico di consegnare anche i medicinali necessari. Buona parte del cibo ricevuto dall'equipaggio è composto da aiuti umanitari dell'Unione Europea.
Food, on the other hand, is provided by Caritas, a religious charity organization that took care of providing medical equipment too. Part of the food delivered by Caritas to the crew is made up of European Union humanitarian aid.
La Ionian Spirit è tenuta in ostaggio dal suo stesso equipaggio, ma la verità è che l'equipaggio ha scelto di vivere per dodici mesi in una prigione galleggiante.
Chi per timore di non vedersi pagati gli stipendi, chi per problemi burocratici legati alla propria provenienza, tutti i marinai sono di fatto prigionieri della nave.
The Ionian Spirit is being held captive by the crew, but the truth is that the crew decided to live for eight months in a floating prison.
All of them became prisoners of the ship, at the same time unable and unwilling to escape its metal walls.
Alcuni membri dell'equipaggio lavoravano come stewart della Ionian Spirit, un lavoro molo sociale, costantemente a diretto contatto con i passeggeri, e ora che la nave è completamente vuota, passano i loro giorni davanti al computer, cercando di agganciarsi a qualche connessione intermittente. Uno dei pochissimi amici che hanno è Ririco, il pappagallo della nave. Ogni tanto lo lasciano uscire dalla gabbia e Ririco zampetta curioso sui tavoli, ma esattamente come i suoi amici umani, non spicca il volo e non lascia mai la nave. E', di fatto, il ventisettesimo prigioniero della Ionian Spirit.
Some members of the crew worked as stewart, a very social job, always in touch with a lot of people, and now that the ship is totally empty, they spend their days in front of the computer, trying to catch on the only, faltering internet connection on board. One of the few friends they have is Ririco, the parrot of the ship. Now and then they take him out of his cage and Ririco walks around on the tables, but just like his human friends, he doesn’t fly away and never leaves the ship. He’s the 27th willing prisoner of the Ionian Spirit.
Uno degli aspetti peculiari di questa storia è il totale silenzio da parte degli organi di informazione. A un certo punto, l'equipaggio ha dichiarato, senza dare alcun preavviso, che la nave sarebbe stata data alle fiamme in caso di mancato pagamento degli stipendi. Era, in realtà, un ultimatum di dieci giorni, seguito dal gesto dimostrativo di ammucchiare le sedie della nave nel ponte superiore. Tenendo in considerazione che quella di un incendio a bordo di una nave pienamente funzionante è una possibilità spaventosa e tutt'altro che improbabile, la catasta di sedie e la mancanza di sistemi di sicurezza funzionanti rendevano la minaccia dell'equipaggio ancora più preoccupante. Nonostante ciò, nessun giornale ha fatto menzione di questi eventi.
One of the peculiar aspects of this story was the utter silence the press kept over it. At some point, without any warning, the crew, announced that they would burn the ship if the company kept refusing to pay. It was a ten days ultimatum, followed by the piling of all the chairs of the ship on the upper deck. Thinking about how easily a fire can start and spread aboard a fully functional ship, the chair-made woodpile is a very real threat, but it was utterly ignored by the press. No newspaper wrote about it.
I veri protagonisti di questa storia, però, sono i marinai coinvolti, tutto lo stress a cui sono stati sottoposti loro malgrado e quello a cui sono state sottoposte le loro famiglie, minacciate non solo dalla privazione di uno stipendio, ma anche di quella di un compagno.
And on top of this, there are all the stories of the sailors involved. All the stress endured by them and all their families, threatened by the lack of a wage and a husband.
