For my final project, I was assigned to create a conceptual garment based on the theme of "A Journey." I took the concept as a journey through life and all of its constant changes and transformations. The theme that kept popping into my head was the concept of metamorphosis. I began to research elements taken from butterflies, moths, and of course cocoons. I also wanted to add a juxtaposing element so to contrast the beautiful elements of a butterflies wings, I decided to incorporated deconstructed elements such as ripping, and burning fabric. I experimented with many fabric manipulations and decided to use alternative materials to create cocoon like structures. I played around with pantyhose by ripping and shredding it over wire and burning holes into fabrics. To add hints of color to the neutral color palette, I dyed the skirt fabric with idye and an eye dropper. The outcome of the garment was successful in my opinion because it did not turn into an obvious and literal translation of the meaning of metamorphosis. Enjoy!
