For this project, my task was to use animals to illustrate a societal issue in America. I chose to tackle the issue of racism as there are still individuals who look down upon, and continue to discriminate against, African Americans for a myriad of reasons. In illustrating this issue, I chose to create dogs with different hair styles and the ways in which they respond to each other. In deciphering the message of a photo, different individuals can come away with different perspectives as a result of their unique experiences. One such individual relayed to me that he saw "oppression" when viewing the picture. Specifically, he saw the canine with the dark black hair as Asian; the one with the brown hair as Hispanic; the one with the blond hair as White; and finally, the canine with the afro hair as Black. To this individual, the dogs appear to have their own superior attitudes and none of them seem to get along with each other. It is as if they are "so stuck on their looks and think the way they appear is better than, and more attractive over, each other. So, if no one looks like them, then they are seen as inferior." I was amazed that this individual saw this and acknowledged that this complex over looks still exists today.
