SKIL is a global brand ofpower tools. As the inventor of the Skil saw (the electric circular hand saw)it is a brand with a reputation of making work easier for DIY enthusiasts aswell as semi-professionals. Recently industrial design agency FLEX/theINNOVATIONLAB in The Netherlands developed a range of equipment called the‘Urban’ garden tools as an extension of the Skil brand: hedge cutter, trimmer, lawnmower, pressure cleaner, etc.
FLEX’ designers researched theuse of electric garden tools in order to identify areas for improvement. As theprimary performance of the tools had been optimized over the course of manyyears the main opportunities were found in the secondary functionality of thetools: cleaning, maintaining, storing, etc. Most of the time, garden tools arestored in a shed, garage or attic which are often not the best organized partsof the home. Clutters of wires and hoses can make a fast and simple storage(and finding it back when needed!) even more challenging. Theresult is a range-wide solution regarding storage. Every tool has a hookintegrated as a feature into the housing. As every product comes with auniversal rail component people can hang all their garden tools on the wall. Itoffers convenience and order without the need to buy extra accessories and thuspay more for it. Storage becomes simple and obvious:
Because Skil is a new brand inthe field of garden tools it needed a visual brand language that would lendthem authority and credibility. The solution was found in the visual connectionto the identity of the other Skil products (drills, skilsaw, grinders, etc)combined with a consistent use of simple (easy to clean) form language.
