Danielle McLaughlin’s Short Story ‘In Through the Skin’ was the winning entry in the Merriman Short Story Competition. The competition was run by Cumann Merriman in conjunction with Ennis Book Club Festival and Clare Country Library. The competition is the result of a gift from Maeve Binchy to Merriman.
I was fortunate to Illustrate Danielle’s wonderful short story ‘In Through the Skin’. I’m very comfortable working with a brief like this. I get to introduce the reader to the story wthout giving away too much information.
My first sketches teased out the idea but weren’t suitable for presentation to the client
I sketched the idea out again and emailed it to the client knowing it was going to be a horizontal area and that I would get the dimensions in a day or two.
I worked out a palette of colours and set to drawing everything up in Illustrator first which allowed me to rearrange the design once I had the dimensions.
