The Assignment
Graphic designers will often spend the majority of their careers working with type. A letterform is a symbol, it represents something unrelated to its form; a sound. For centuries
designers have been fascinated with the form of letters. These forms can be utilized to
communicate in powerful ways. This assignment is intended to give you an opportunity to
explore the form of letters, and the ways in which those forms communicate.
Design 4 squares following the rules provided for each. You are required to develop a
theme for each square. One squares theme must be inspired by one of the following
themes: openness, dependability, fear, stability, instability, joy, love, anger, chaos. This
theme will provide a guide in which to judge the elements being added or removed from a
composition.
