Jaishu Devi, 23, of Jhajju village in Kolayat was operated four years ago. It didn't work out. She has given birth to two children after that
Guidelines for sterilisation: The woman must be above the age of 22 and below 49. The couple should have at least one child above the age of one year
The woman must be informed about all family planning methods; must be told that sterilisation is permanent; and about what can happen before, during and after the surgery, its side-effects and potential complications
Very few women get compensation. Last year, of the six women whose operations failed in Jhajju village in Kolayat, only one received Rs 30,000 as compensation.
Young women, mostly in their twenties, lie on the floor after undergoing sterilisation operation at a community health centre in Kolayat block in Bikaner. In a hurry to bring down fertility rate, health officials are blatantly flouting government’s guidelines.
Not more than 30 surgeries can be undertaken in one camp, state the guildelines set by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2008. Beds with mattresses and pillows are a must. Clearly, the guidelines are being flouted.
