This issue was a fun challenge. Many of the articles presented such interesting theoretical concepts that on my first round I spent a lot of time trying to illustrate the abstract. However my editor, upon seeing that first round, asked in most cases that we move back to the concrete using the photos we had. In essence it meant going back to the drawing board with a deadline looming. This sort of process is actually one of the reason I delight in working with this editor. She trusts me to get her what she really wants, and knows to never be satisfied with less.
We came up with another round. I couldn't have been happier with it. It was less whimsical than my original ideas (see the last spread for example of a first round design), but had an elegance and classic sensibility to it that seemed eminently suited to the timelessness of math concepts.
