INFORMATION DESIGN

  • A large wall graphic designed as part of an exhibit on Human Migration, based on recent research findings on haplogroups and human development, and following a specific clan's journey over the millenia.
  • One of the several info designs produced by our small group exploring the cycle and intricacies of 'cognitive surplus' and social networking.
  • I created this poster to communicate the progression of t-shirt usage through the 20th century to now, based on our cultural and societal relationship to this particular article of clothing. I researched the history of the t-shirt in the United States and identified and named several stages of this "relationship". I wrote a short paragraph for each stage summarizing the general atmosphere that lead to each transition. My favorite part of creating this poster was deciding on the shirt designs for each stage and designing the hairstyles to reflect different eras.
  • These are just four of the many ideas I sketched in order to explore a variety of ways to present the information I was trying to get across in the t-shirt poster above.
  • This poster is more of a storytelling piece and shares the journey of second-hand clothing through the unique perspective of a single t-shirt. I wanted to create a sense of movement and emotion as the viewer experiences the journey of this t-shirt from an apartment in New York to a dirt road in Africa. The story is hand-written and placed among the images of the journey, giving it a sort of 'open storybook' sort of feel.

    The story:
Her name was Susie. She bought me to work out in. So strong and durable I was back then. One day, I found myself stuffed into a garbage bag. I was thrown into a big pile, in a musty basement. But, I guess they didn't want me there. So I was taken away and squeezed in to another bag. Then it was dark - for a very long time.....

When my bag was opened, I could tell I was in a different place. They called me "second rate" and I was carried away once again. It was hot and dusty and I was spread out flat in the sun. One day an old man picked me up and took me me with him. He said I would bring him luck....And I did.

It's nice to be wanted again.
  • Some early visual explorations for the poster idea above.
  • An early 'point of view' sketch for the poster above.
  • I created this small field guide to hold  and categorize the hundreds of marks I created one semester using many different materials and surfaces. I treated this project like as a study in scientific classification, complete with a periodic table of elements (used to show the guide contents).
  • This image (and the ones below it) are some of the divider pages I created for the marks field guide. Each material is indicated by the content as well as being spelled out on the right side of the divider page.
  • This divider is for the transformed section which contained marks that I altered in some way.
