Illustration contest participation.

The theme of the contest was Portugal. I was working in this original piece (still to be finished), the first piece of the portuguese guitar series as a homage to Portugal´s history.
Work selected for the final public exhibition and catalogue.
ILUSTRA_Portugal07 - Contest participation.
This piece is based in a series of drawings about the portuguese guitar theme. The original piece is yet to be finished. For this contest I used Photoshop and Illustrator to complete what was missing.

There's many details with meaning. The portuguese guitar is a sailing caravel, like many crossed the oceans centuries ago in the search of new discoveries. The headstock is a overlaping of views that result in a wood crown. This represents our royal heritage and despite all the discoveries we never got to be today a rich country, therefore the wood. The machine heads are rose buttons, like continue promises of the future. The two torn sails are the maps of Portugal, and they represent the crisis and storms Portugal passed through the centuries. The neck inlays are crosses of Christ, to represent our catholic heritage. The big green eye looks ahead to the future. Green represents hope. The tear with the anchor represents the weight of sadness, so natural in Fado, capable to sink us into abysses of the depths. Finally, the ocean was our path to discover new worlds.
Thanx for your time & attention.
Cheers
M.
