- ICE (H20) - Black
The black formationsin Rossi’s images appear to be tree-bark or stone, but what we see are “ephemeral sculptures” frozen in timeby her camera. They are the last remnants of an ancient glacier that is in the final stages of melting away. Rossi’s images freeze in time the tragic yet wondrous shapes and forms that appear as a consequence of our industrial rampage.
Her work centres on the changes occurring on ourplanet as a result of climate change. She does not work in a studio, or anywhere nearcivilisation. In order to create this surreal imagery Rossi mustendure many months in some of the world’s most distant and inhospitable places:Antarctica, Alaska, and most of all Patagonia where she has lived for severalyears.
In ICE (H20) an ongoing project that portrays the effects of GLOBAL WARMING, the colours of Rossi’s ice images symbolise different aspects in the cycle of destruction and dissolution of the natural world:
- BLACK ICE, tainted by volcanic ash and rock, is a metaphor for pollution. As it slowly flows from the glacier it reminds us of filthy rivers and black clouds of toxic fumes emanating from chimneystacks in China or the former Soviet Union, where the sun never shines and nature is has been destroyed. Black is the future if we continue the reckless exploitation of our natural resources.
