Hydroponics Via Vertical Farming
Year Round Production of Lettuce and Strawberry in Vertical Nutrient Film Channeling System
Hydroponics is the growing of plants without soil, using water and mineral nutrient solution. Hydroponic farming techniques were used by many different civilizations in the past; Hydroponics has been neglected due to its “high start-up cost”. Hydroponics has been recently introduced to several developing countries as a major solution to food crisis. Hydroponic production can alleviate poverty while protecting the environmental resources, especially water and soil minerals. Water and nutrients can be recycled, greatly reducing the resources necessary to grow food. Recycling decreases the usage of water and fertilizers by 80% than the traditional agriculture. Pesticide usage is almost eliminated by eliminating soil-borne diseases. Another environmental benefit specific to Lebanon and similar small countries is the limitation on land use. Hydroponic is expected to become a significant source of food in over populated countries with people growing food on rooftops or verandas. Hydroponic systems can produce up to 5 times more than the conventional systems. If artificial light is added, production can run all year long, making higher benefit from the same land space. On the other hand, the most important disadvantage is the startup cost of Hydroponics. However, once the system is established, the running cost is much cheaper than soil cultivation, and the product value is higher, therefore a very quick return on investment. In Lebanon and arid areas where agricultural land is narrow, vertical farming is the best possible solution. Our Project’s aim is to describe in details how vertical hydroponic farming can be applied in a multiple floor greenhouse that would be the result of higher production while using the same area of land. We made the feasibility study of starting a Hydroponics project in Lebanon and studied the possibility of making this investment and its profitability. Our results are encouraging.
