Human Predators: A Study of Serial Murder

  • Human Predators: A Study of Serial Murder
    graphic / complex / intelligent / disturbing / expressive

This publication presents a factual representation of serial killers with the purpose of enabling a quick-witted audience to develop a deep understanding of the complex topic. The goal was to visually express the disturbing content in an accurate and dynamic manner while using a simplified colour palette, red and black. The book uses multiple processes of image-making (photocopying, photography, scanning, etc.) to express the graphic nature of the topic. To create a single image, many images have been overlaid together creating an unsettling and grainy appearance, which is reflective of the topic. Visually, the design spreads are graphic, unsettling, broken, and dark. There is a structured grid system for the typography, which holds everything together, while the imagery breaks the grid. The design uses strong organizational and visual techniques such as hierarchy, emphasis, sequencing, and layering to create interest and allow the book to flow from page-to-page. The topic has been portrayed how it is: disturbing, graphic, repulsive, complex and horrifying.
