Houston Zoo: African Forest

  • Houston Zoo: African Forest
    Lyons/Zaremba Inc, 2010
  • The African Forest at Houston Zoo is an immersive experience that leads visitors through a simulated Gabonese forest, Baka Pygmy village, chimpanzee research station, and marketplace. The central narrative revolves around Tommy, a fictional poacher-turned-conservationist, and his efforts against illegal poaching. A side plot involves the hunt for the Koolookamba, a legendary chimpanzee-gorilla hybrid that can be spotted throughout the exhibit in hidden places.
  • Visitors are encouraged to take a Field Guide that provides an introduction to Tommy, Baka pygmies, and the Bushmeat Crisis—in case they didn't watch the intro video.
  • A sampling of faux posters and flyers created to help set the environment at the Trading Post, modeled after real Gabonese health/info posters.
  • An "eccentric" collage of faux articles for Tommy's Treehouse research station, supposedly clippings that he's collected after years in the jungle. His interests include chimpanzees, pygmies, and the search for the legendary Koolookamba (a Bigfoot-esque creature that's a chimpanzee-gorilla hybrid).
  • Graphic panels play up handmade textures and patterns.
