As part of the Setouchi Triennale 2013, I have installed a new project, “Houses for Light,” on the island of Ogijima.  “Houses for Light” consists of three sculptures sited at different locations on Ogijima.  This project was selected as part of the Setouchi Triennale 2013 Open Call for Proposals.

The “Houses for Light” sculptures represent my deep fondness for Ogijima.  The base of the sculpture is taken from the form of the Ogijima lighthouse.  I replaced the light of the lighthouse with a climbing mountain of the colorful Ogijima buildings that are seen upon entering and leaving Ogijima port.   These two motifs along with the Ogijima residents and the island’s site-specific artworks make Ogijima one of my favorite locales in all of Japan.

By placing the sculptures in different locations on the island, I intend them to be beacons guiding Ogijima residents and visitors alike from the port to the lighthouse.  In this journey, I hope people will take the opportunity to talk with residents, explore the island, and commune with the artworks during the course of the Setouchi Triennale 2013.

The Setouchi Triennale takes place from March 20 – April 21, July 20 – September 1, and October 5 – November 4, 2013.
