As a huge fan of gig poster art, on this project I wanted to create an illustrated poster that sat almost in opposition to the band's visual style and sleeve design. This is the joy of the illustrated gig poster, as it's often a standalone piece of communication that rarely follows the same line as the everyday marketing.
After listening to the band and seeing the live show I had an image in my head of something quite dark, surreal and gothic. We later discussed rock bands of the 70s flirting with occult themes and imagery, and I had the initial idea of the horse in the top hat sketched out. The main composition of the image was directly inspired by an Aleister Crowley illustration, and the colour restricted to a four-colour palette with screen printing in mind.
