The story behind the bookshelf may not be obvious, so in short, it is about direction, exactly what an arrow signifies. the color represents that which is the middle ground between white and black, holy and unholy. the rough, unfinished look is us human beings, and how god is still able to work his way from the inside out and fit perfectly.
