Heart of Darkness
Classic Novella Redesign
Heart of Darkness, a classic novella written by Joseph Conrad is a story of a man recounting his trip up the Congo into the heart of Africa. It is ultimately a story about morality and the main character questioning his own societies values. The main character describes his journey up the river as a journey back in time to a "prehistoric earth." Farther into Africa the Natives were using arrows and other primitive weapons. I thought it would be appropriate and minimal to put an arrow on the front cover. The "darkness" in the title refers to the inability to see and failing to understand other individuals. I wanted to create a cover that was dark at first glance but in the right lighting the viewer could make out the contents of the cover. After designing the inside pages, I ordered the book from blurb.com. I then screen printed matt text on the glossy cover. As an alternative and a way to protect the cover from scratches and wear I created a dust jacket. This dust jacket is matt black paper with screen printed glossy text.
