Recognizing the need for a standardized provincial resource for expecting parents and parents of young children, AHS developed the “Healthy Parents, Healthy Children” printed resource. Now, there was a need to translate this formidable two-volume book into a comprehensive, interactive format. Reimagining how 600 pages of content could best be presented in an online platform was no easy task. The trick was to stop thinking about the books as "books" and put ourselves in the shoes of parents—who just need answers, like, now. This allowed us to look at the project through fresh eyes and begin breaking the information into easily digestible bits.

The illustrations were fun but the main challenge here was the animation. Originally these were embedded videos but right in the middle of the project Apple released an update killing the autoplay function on their devices forcing us to go back to the drawing board. The solution was good old fashioned animated gifs. Although a little clunky on older tablets I was surprised how well they still turned out.

I was really proud of this project not because it's the sexiest site we've ever done but because it's really made a change to the people who use this resource. By rethinking how this would work in an online environment we've created a tool that works well and is easy to get around.
