Healthy Habits: Special Olympics NE
- For six weeks during the summer of 2011, I was chosen to be a design intern at Bailey Lauerman as part of their first BL Internship Experience. Over the six weeks of the experience, I and five other interns were tasked to create both a health initiative and a campaign for the athletes of Special Olympics Nebraska.
The Healthy Habits program is a starter program for unhealthy athletes. By taking small steps every day to a healthier lifestyle, the athlete will be happier and healthier in the long run. By making even one healthy choice, the athlete wins and puts him or herself on the path to a healthier life. The athlete is doing good things for his or her own sake, which is how the line "I'm a fan of me" manifested.
The look and design were a collaborative effort of myself and Dan Buechter, another design intern on the team.
Currently, Special Olympics Nebraska is implementing this campaign.
It has also gained funding in Wisconsin.
Included were a series of posters, featuring an athlete in a "podium moment" - the feeling that rushes over an athlete once they win in a sport. By doing very basic things, e.g. picking up the jumprope and exercising with it, the athlete puts him or herself on the path to wellness.
All illustrations were drawn by me.

An athlete holding dumbbells
An athlete with an apple
Both a weekly and monthly tracking system were developed to motivate athletes.

The guide book make for the athletes, drawing out the plan for success in both illustrations and simple copy.
