Haiti: Climb to Recovery

Haiti: Climb to Recovery
Post Earthquake Port Au Prince, Haiti
You could see them all around: the remnants of schools, churches, shops, and homes. What little these people had was torn to the ground. Some were left only their lives; others were less fortunate. The sense of loss was everywhere, especially in the eyes of the people and in the way they shuffled around, aimlessly, unsure of what to do next.

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the Caribbean country of Haiti. Unprepared for such an event, the island country was devastated. Many people had only their lives to lose--and lose them they did, by the hundreds of thousands.

Videographer--and my cousin--Tim Wolfer asked me to accompany him on his second trip to Port Au Prince. He was making a documentary about one of the saddest parts of the earthquake--the children it orphaned. Tim traveled to Haiti to record Maison des Enfants de Dieu orphanage and the struggles it went through to evacuate 135 orphans from the destruction. What we witnessed was heart wrenching, but Tim felt a burden to tell the world what Haiti lost and what it needed.

There was hope. Aid from people like Tim came in from around the globe. In Haiti's greatest time of need, the world responded. The rebuilding had began. In the face of fear of another quake, Haiti began it's upward climb to rebuild.

Tim's documentary, "Adopting Haiti" can be viewed on hulu.com.
