On the second floor of a row-house somewhere in Queens – not four blocks from New York City’s A-line – a handful of creative minds gathered for their first listen into HZRDS RSNS. Still heavy from the long day and aching from the stabbing cold outside, Rodney Hazard, one half of Hazardous Raisins, pressed play.
Cardi x Coke was up first and served as a catalyst for all the creativity in the room. Ears perked, heads nodded, and soon I began fantasizing about video concepts. The other side of the room discussed potential Bacardi endorsements to match the catchy hook that praised the well-known party potion. But to Hazard and rap-mate Raisin Brand, it wasn’t about the deals or the rough visuals I had in mind. Their self-proclaimed genre, Dry Ambiance, made perfect sense after I got a taste of the full album’s classic drum kits – the heartbeats of art – and wavy electronics. The self-titled HZRDS RSNS picks you up from whatever mood you’re in and puts you in a different space. Sometimes you’re alone with your thoughts, the lyrics, and heavy bass. Other times your crammed in a car with your best friends beside you vibing; enjoying how the speakers vibrate...
