Innovating on how users interact with a locked mobile device
- A new way of thinking about lockscreenThe objective for this project was to explore how users could interact with a mobile device when it was 'locked'. This involved challenging assumptions as to what 'locked' really meant to the user, and opened the idea of an 'Idle state'. In this state, primary functions were protected from accidental actuation, but key content was instantly accessible to the user.When dragging up on the bottom ring, the user would exit the idle state, and return home (or their previous location within the system). If the user dragged a shortcut icon onto the ring, the user would unlock the device and automatically navigate directly to that application.
- Displaying user content on the homescreenThis lockscreen concept also involved elevating key user content up to the lockscreen. One fundamental question when designing this experience was, why had lockscreens of the past limited the experience to wallpaper, time, and unlock mechanism? Since the lockscreen is such high visibility, why not use this valuable screen real-estate to display key user content?The examples below illustrate a few of the published concepts, where a user could; set their favorite photos as a 3D slideshow, or check the weather, keep an eye on their stock portfolio, enjoy their favorite music, or read their latest posts from their social network.
