Brazil is already the country with largest number of deaths caused by swine influenza in the world. Bulletin released yesterday by the Ministry of Health shows that up to 23 days were 557 confirmed deaths from the disease. Secondly, are the United States, with 522 records of fatal cases.
The number, however, may be even greater. As occurred last week, the total of suspected cases of swine flu in research is much higher than has been found. Of the 3970 suspected cases of swine flu reported in the last week, only 15% had laboratory tests completed: 273 confirmed for H1N1, 33 for seasonal flu and 295 discarded.
Since the epidemic began, there is already a backlog of 20,775 suspected cases in the queue awaiting the test results that will confirm or rule out the disease. With the updated numbers released yesterday, the death rate of the disease in Brazil is now 0.29. This indicator represents the 7th highest rate of mortality in a ranking of 16 countries.
