Isla del Sol
Bolivia 2012
Después de estar algunos días en Perú y recién llegada a la Isla del Sol en Bolivia, empecé a notar como las mujeres en este país son extremadamente fuertes. Empezando por la mujer que nos recibió en el hostal. Usaba las típicas faldas o “polleras” largas y un saco o “chompa” de lana para protegerse del frío, así como el Bombín ó sombrero hongo que todas las mujeres usan en esta región. Nos recibió muy amablemente y ella se encargó de mostrarnos las habitaciones y de darnos las cobijas para que no sintiéramos frío esa noche, todo esto mientras su marido estaba encerrado en su habitación.
21 de Diciembre de 2012, día en el que se celebró el solsticio de verano, el cierre del ciclo del no-tiempo y la llegada del Pachakuti, la “nueva era” en un tiempo de equilibrio y armonía con la Pachamama. Un día en el que pude ver de cerca la fuerza y la berraquera (como decimos aquí en Colombia) de unas mujeres que hacen todo para mantener a sus familias y para tener un hogar digno. Mujeres que son capaces de caminar durante dos horas, cargando a sus hijos en la espalda con los aguayos, mientras que llevan en sus manos ollas metálicas llenas de sopa de un peso impresionante para vender a los turistas de la isla, lastimando sus manos debido a su gran peso. Mujeres que luchan solas sin la ayuda de sus maridos y logran criar hijas que al igual que ellas crecen siendo todas unas guerreras.
After being travelling a while in Perú and just arriving to “La Isla del Sol” in Bolivia, I started to notice how extremely strong women are in this country. Starting with the woman that received us in the hostel. She was using the typical long skirts or “polleras” and a wool sweater or “chompa” to protect herself of the cold weather, as well as a hat or “bombín” that every women of this region use. She welcomed us very gently and she was in charge of showing us the rooms and giving us the blankets so that we didn't feel so cold during the night, all this while her husband was locked in his room.
December 21, 2012, the day were the summer solstice was celebrated, the closure of the non-time era and the arrival of Pachakuti, the “new era” in a time of balance and harmony with the Pachamama. A day in which I saw the strenght and "berraquera" (as we say here in Colombia) of women that do everything to hold their families and to have a decent home. Women that are able to walk during two hours, carrying their children on their backs with their “aguayos”, while they take on their hands incredibly heavy metalic pots full of soup that they sell to the tourists on the island, hurting their hands because of the heavy weight. Women that fight alone without their husbands’s help and get to raise daughters that at the same time grow up as great warriors.
