Noble Elementary School
in Cleveland Heights Ohio recently moved its main entrance to a
location closer to the school office. For security reasons many older
schools are making similar moves. Principal Julie Beers wanted to
create a welcoming atmosphere in the new entrance and asked me to work
with students and staff on a glass tile mosaic installation. Mosaics can be made from a variety of materials including
stone, ceramic and glass among others. We chose glass tesserae because
of their refractory nature, allowing the material to subtly change color
throughout the day as the sun moves through the sky. This gives a
sparkle to the project and reflects light and color throughout the area.
design of the mosaic also visually directs visitors to the school
office where they can sign in, register new students or meet with
teachers or staff. Our imagery was chosen to delight elementary
students and brighten the start of their school day.
