- Grimm's Fairytales
A book cover competition entry for Penguin
Grimm’s Fairytales are a collection of fairytales with slightly sinister storylines. I have reflected this in the book cover I designed.
I chose to use the collage technique to create the illustrations seen on my book cover. The colour scheme is one of many bright colours, as it would appeal to a younger audience. The sinisterness is shown through visual techniques such as the block colour
for the eyes of Hansel and Gretel. This gives the impression of the characters being void of emotion, which I believe makes the child-like collage designs beautifully twisted. The overall visual effect of the book cover was inspired by arts and crafts which is seen through hints such as the sewn lines on the spine of the book, the paper-cut birds on the back or the jumbled looking title font.
