We were challenged to create an information graphic for each of the three topics our icons represented. All three info graphics needed work together visually and verbally to support their theme. The end result was a family of information graphics. My research focused on the Evolution of the Lighthouses of the Great Lakes. The first theme is Survival; the main functions of lighthouses in the early 19th Century included aiding in surviving the treacherous waters and ultimately replenishing supplies in the colonies. The second theme is Industrual Expansion and Lighthouse Growth; as land transportation expanded with the invention of the steam engine, so did the opportunities for trade from farther distances and across waters. The third theme is Relics; as technology has evolved, the lighthouse’s function for survival and expansion has dwindled. Now, it is more likely to see the lighthouse as a museum or landmark, a relic of an evolving world.
