Girard Sansusie, a lettering style typeface

Girard Sansusie
A typeface for House Industries
In 2005, House Industries invited me to digitize the lettering used to announce the textile designs that Alexander Girard did for Herman Miller. Girard Sansusie is a reinterpretation of this design, based on the few letters that were available to me.Girard Sansusie combines a folksy flair with a lettering style evident throughout the Girard oeuvre, most notably on his 1955 Herman Miller fabric catalog. Alexander Girard was a master at utilizing lettering and type as practical, illustrative and readable elements. The result of a research odyssey that spanned thousands of miles and three years, these four fonts will infuse any design project with Girard’s signature folk sensibilities while working seamlessly in any contemporary publishing environment.
Copious alternate characters and “smart” OpenType programming allow Sansie to escape the rigid confines of typography to come alive as if flowing from Girard’s sketchpad.
