Gender Styling (Dream Enhancement Tonic)

  • 'Gender Styling' was a project set in Semester Two at Uni this year. The aim was to create a hypothetical enhancement  tonic/potion to design labelling for. The labels had to be distinctively male and female, by colour and content.

I chose to create labels for a 'Dream Enhancement Tonic' that has two main effects, depending on when it is taken. When taken at night dreams are enhanced to become much move vivid and action packed (movie like), whereas when taken during the day an individual's imagination is unlocked to reveal their subconscious creativity.

We were advised to steer away from the typical blue for boys and pink for girls in the colour schemes for this project which is why I have set up the red/orange/brown and yellow/purple. The keyhole shape design makes reference to the 'unlocking' of imagination that occurs when this tonic is consumed.
  • Male figure to appear on label.
  • The outline of the keyhole creates an area to work within. Addition of watercolour effect with chosen colour schemes. Red, orange and brown for the Male to represent strength and action.
  • Final placement of figure and supporting graphics. I chose to draw action/adventure icons such as cars, eagles, ships, mountains and planes to add to the male composition. The squares act as both a race starter flag which represents speed and action and a chessboard which represents strategy. Due to the choice of added items, the male label focusses on the dream enhancement (vivid action) side of the tonic.
  • Use of clipping mask to create the keyhole shape and added type.
  • Initial drawing for female figure.
  • Applied colour scheme for female of purple and yellow to represent soft strength.
  • Final placement of figure and supporting graphics. For the female, I drew elements of nature to symbolise every women's connection to nature. This label's appearance focusses more on the imaginative effects of the tonic.
  • Clipping mask to create the final keyhole shape and addition of type.
  • Final Male Label (front and back)
  • Final Female Label (front and back)
  • Final labels produced and placed onto the appropriate jars for display.
  • The two final front labels. Both clearly aimed at the specific gender.
