A big part of recreating historical european martial arts is studying
and creating your own equipment. Everything from daggers to shields, and
in this case, a padded defensive jacket worn as armour and as a
platform to hang mail or plate armour on. It's vital that the jacket has
a good fit so that the best possible movement is achieved,
customization is the best way to go. The pictures you see below is after
the gambeson has been used for two years. Note the heart on the chest, a
symbol taken from my coat of arm, something I use on all my equipment.
I did some historical research to appropriately match
the jacket with my chosen historical time period. After that, I did the
pattern and everything from dying the fabric to fastening the straps.
