Futbol for Humanity is a project that started out as a design for civility. After much research and observation, I discovered the lack of civility in sports. My new goal for this project was to bring civility back to sports with an emphasis on children's sports. Initially my designs were to get children back out into the streets and participate in pickup games between neighborhood friends. However, I later had an "ah hah" moment and realized there are children in less fortunate countries that don't have the equipment and opportunity to play sports. As a soccer player most of my life, I really wanted to create a donation system that would allow these kids in other counties to be able to play soccer.
Futbol for Humanity donation system works in the following way: 1) A consumer has the option to purchase the prepackaged / pre-addressed soccer ball at a local sporting goods store. That person can donate the ball directly or keep the brand new ball, replace it with a used ball, and place it back in the packaging for donation. The packaging includes a ball, cones, and a pump. 2) The consumer can drop of the ball at the post office, where it is shipped to a non-profit organization where they are collected and distributed to the underprivileged children across the world. 3) Once the package is shipped, the consumer can track the package via a website to see what child or children received the your ball 4) Companies like Nike, Addidas, or Puma can sponsor this program and have their name on the packaging and their brand of soccer ball in the package.
