Travelling through Fremantle, Australia we took a chance and went exploring through Fremantle Prison. The prison was built in the 1850’s and closed only as recently as 1991 where convicts were still imprisoned in almost medieval conditions.
My father talked to one of the guides who had an uncanny first hand knowledge of prison life, and a harsh stone cold demeanour. He asked him if he used to be a warden in the jail. The guide turned to him and said in a curt military tone, “There are only two kinds of people who come back here. Those who served here, and those who worked here. Next question?!”
