Freginals is a small town located in Montsià, south of Catalonia.It is surrounded by olive tree fields framed in a corridor between two mountain ranges: Serralada del Montsià and Serra del Godall. In the top of a hill, its identity falls upon its façade (Albarracín, Morella...). This façade has the particularity of beign responsible of welding the urban and field patterns. If we would be harvesting, rapidly we would build some terraces, generating horizontal heights. Understanding this, this horizontal heights evolve into smoothly inclined heights, descending in zig-zag. Buildings connect the height differentials. Grounded as flagstones, they develop the town façade as an aggregation of rooftops, smoothly ascending to the town. This way, streets become places to be. In each street confluence a fountain, some trees and benches invite to meet, relate or simply relax.
The contact between fields and town patterns becomes a two sided dialogue: Streets are enlarged, connecting with the fields’ paths, and field alignments define public spaces and island shapes.
Finally, this new urban development connects with the town through a public facility facing a big square in the top of the development. Read Less
