Fractures... timeline

This "Fracture" series was created for the "back to nature Showdown" held by Saatchi online. Approaching this from a conceptual perspective, one of the most fundamental things I could think of was "Rock"... having settled on the subject, I first took some photographs of a rock face that I found interesting to develop the idea of naturally occurring art.

As I am one of those people who can stare for hours at a piece of twig or stare open mouthed at a rock - I thought it would be interesting to explore our ability to appreciate
natural "random" phenomenon.

Other than cutting out sections along the fractures to give interesting shapes, I haven't composed any of this work - rather - as it developed, I devised a system of grids, placing
the original samples randomly, then started rotating sections of the grid to overlay other
grids underneath and then applying layer filters.

The initial pieces are showing the individual bits - then some samples of the x16 grid. Followed by the individual "Fractures"  - I wanted to have as little control over the resulting compositions as possible… and the peices in the "Fractures" section are the end result, and the aim of the project... The compositions are completely random.

Unfortunately - Ive had so much trouble with the Saatchi site I never submitted anything anyway and have closed the account - but it has been fun exploring.

I placed the original samples (above), randomly on a x16 grid, then started rotating sections of the grid to overlay other grids underneath, then started applying layer filters.

These are actualy rather large files - each 1/16th grid section is 140cm at 400dpi.
This last one is a quarter section of the x16 grid, just to illustrate how the individual sections were developing.

I actually produced many more of these sections, but recognise
there is a limit to anyones tolerance!
