Role: Art Direction, Design and Production
First Focus is a children's advocacy organization based in Washington, DC. Beginning in 2008, they decided to publish what they hoped to make a yearly report, the Children's Budget Book. Each year, when the White House releases the President's budget for the following year, First Focus tracks the funding of every piece that affects children. The book analyzes the trends in funding of eight areas (education, health, safety, etc.), as well as the specific funding of each program.
Our firm's challenge was to infuse some life into Excel tables full of financial and program information to compel their audience to take action to reverse the downward trends in funding. We created a colorful, photo-filled report that highlighted nearly 200 programs. 2008's initial run for congressmen, lobbyists and other interested parties was distributed in just over a month, far exceeding expectations, and a second run was quickly completed.
By 2009, banking off the success of the first year's book, First Focus had developed a website to track the funding. They came back to us to design the 2009 book, and we combined the colors and style from the website, as well as the organization's recently updated identity, with the overall feel of the 2008 book. The final product was a 140-page book, even more colorful and vibrant than the previous year's product. Our firm was contracted again to continue the series with the 2010 edition.
