  • Film pencils
pencils graded from hard to soft actor

  • Idea
For the pencil project in L2 at University College Falmouth, I was asked to design the packaging for pencils that would be sold at the gift shop of the museum of my choice. I chose The Museum of the Moving Image, and I got an idea about grading the pencils from hard to soft - in actors.

  • The pencils are flat ‘carpenter pencils’, all with print on them. An illustration of the actor, name and movies they starred in. The only information you get about the hardness/softness of the pencil is from the grey box behind their name and the general impression you have of the actors (we all know that Eastwood is definitely the most ‘hard’ actor). They will be sold in film reel tins sized down, and the pencils will be arranged so that you can see all the faces of the actors when you open it up.

The pencils will be presented in the store in a stack on a table, nothing
really suggesting that it could be
pencils inside, not until you read the label on the tins. All giving the illusion of an old fashioned film reel tin, that most movie lovers are going to enjoy having.
