To fully appreciate the symbolic meanings of fish, we must first consider their watery domain. Water holds ancient symbolic meanings dealing with the subconscious and depth of knowledge. Water contains all the mysteriousness of the unknown. Given the wonder that its domain holds, the fish too has similar meaning. In different tradition the fish represents creation, change and transformation, freedom, happiness and abundance, wisdom, inspiration and prophecy. In some myths the fish symbolises a new phase of initial life, floating in the cosmos in the waters of creation; in some others it is an attribute of the Divine Mother principal and represents fertility and power. Also the fish represents adaptability and the flow of life.
In Buddhism the golden fish symbolises the auspiciousness of all living beings in a state of fearlessness, without danger of drowning in the ocean of sufferings, and migrating from place to place freely and spontaneously, just as fish swim freely without fear through water.
