Fe.rocious is an amazing
publication and blog that started just last year with the release of
their first quarterly book featuring illustrators & writers together
in one of the most inspiring collections you’ll ever see. My first
interaction with them was a blog post called “feeling for the invisible
edge” with writer & Fe.rocious editor, Jason Roemer. Jason’s
writing is dark, seedy and raw with an amazing grasp of human nature
and the ability to make you think “I’m the guy in this story” or
“that’s exactly how I would act in that situation”. Check out the post
//HERE// We have big plans to expand this series and have an exhibition this late-summer/fall.
The blog feature was a blast and I was super excited to be invited to
be invited to have a piece in the 2nd publication of the printed book.
The theme is “Purple Halves”. It’s two books. One is red & black and
the other blue & black both printed in 2-color offset.
AsI began thinking about illustrating a piece to go along with a
story, I immediately thought of my good friend Steve Nowak. He’s another
really rad writer that has a very dark sense of humor. We mulled over
quite a few concepts but settled on this little short he wrote about
seeing a mannequin in a department store that looked eerily like his
identical twin. Simply the way he describes the scenario is captivating.
I had no choice but to photograph him and illustrate his portrait
examining himself in a mirror and noticing his
“less-than-mannequin-quality” features.
The printing and production of the finished piece is so solid. They
don’t mess around with their product. You should SERIOUSLY pick one of
these up. They’re only $12!!!
